"The end of all things will be the forgetting of all guilt."
Romeo Castellucci and Teodor Currentzis return to Salzburg for an unusual programme: Bluebeard's Castle by Béla Bartók coupled with De temporum fine comoedia by Carl Orff — two works that seem like opposites on a formal level.

Bluebeard's Castle , a high point in early 20th-century musical theater, was composed in 1911 to a text by Béla Balázs. The story of Bluebeard has its literary archetype in Charles Perrault's fairy tales and tells of a woman killer who forbids his curiosity-driven youngest wife to open a door behind which he has hidden her slain predecessors. Bartók's opera develops entirely out of the dialogue between the two protagonists, Bluebeard and Judith, and reveals a conception of drama as a kind of mental and emotional force field. “Where is the stage: outside or inside?” says the prologue, as an invitation to the audience to ask themselves questions about the enigmatic nature of theater as a reflection of the real.

Judith left her parents and the man who loved her to become Bluebeard's wife. He leads them into his dark, windowless castle—a dwelling of stone, but at the same time a sentient space that weeps, trembles, and groans, and in which are seven locked doors. The young woman wants to find out what the forbidden rooms contain and fill them with light and warmth. Despite Bluebeard trying to dissuade her from her wish, Judith demands the keys and opens the doors one by one: She sees torture devices, weapons, treasure, jewelry, a garden - and everywhere she discovers disturbing traces of blood. Finally, the seventh door reveals Bluebeard's former wives, dressed in rich robes: the women of morning, noon, and evening. Adorned with jewels and draped in a cloak of stars, Judith becomes the woman of the night. The concentration of the action, the lack of spatio-temporal coordinates and the unfathomable atmosphere point to a journey that takes place from the inside.

The theme of De temporum fine comoedia , on the other hand, is the Last Judgment, in a reinterpretation rooted in Orff's personal religious beliefs. The composition of the text in ancient Greek, Latin and German occupied the composer for a whole decade until 1970, whereby the essence of the work was increasingly determined by the apocalyptic vision of the Alexandrian theologian Origen, in which at the end of time even the demons are granted forgiveness and salvation.

In the first part of the Comoedia , nine sibyls announce the imminent end of the world and the eternal damnation of the godless. In the second part, nine anchorites counter these prophecies with a resolute “No”: The learned hermits recognize that the last day will not break in as the triumph of a punishing god, but as the absorption of evil into the divine. The eradication of all guilt and the return of all beings
to God culminate in the third part in Lucifer's re-transformation into the "light bringer" of yore. The fallen angel dresses his request for forgiveness in words from the parable of the prodigal son: “Father peccavi.”

Orff's oratorio opera, which Romeo Castellucci and Teodor Currentzis are bringing back to the festival stage for the first time since the Salzburg premiere in 1973, is overwhelming in its primal energy. This results not least from persistently repeated rhythmic patterns, a mechanical movement principle that captures a large number of people and will be translated into body scores by the choreographer Cindy Van Acker. The atmosphere that pervades Bluebeard's castle is diametrically opposed: Castellucci counters the sombre intimacy of a drama without external action by focusing on the point of view of Judith — and on a trauma that unleashes a theater of the psyche.

The juxtaposition of the two works reveals deep connections, and it seems as if the Last Judgment applies to Judith, as if she had committed a crime herself...

Romeo Castellucci und Teodor Currentzis kehren für ein ungewöhnliches Programm nach Salzburg zurück: Herzog Blaubarts Burg von Béla Bartók, gekoppelt mit De temporum fine comoedia von Carl Orff — zwei Werke, die auf formaler Ebene wie Gegensätze scheinen.

Herzog Blaubarts Burg, ein Höhepunkt im Musiktheater des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts, wurde 1911 auf einen Text von Béla Balázs komponiert. Die Geschichte von Blaubart hat ihren literarischen Archetyp in Charles Perraults Märchen und erzählt von einem Frauenmörder, der seiner von Neugier getriebenen jüngsten Gemahlin verbietet, eine Tür zu öffnen, hinter der er ihre getöteten Vorgängerinnen versteckt hat. Bartóks Oper entwickelt sich ganz aus dem Dialog zwischen den beiden Protagonisten, Blaubart und Judith, und offenbart eine Auffassung des Dramas als eine Art geistiges und emotionales Kraftfeld. „Wo ist die Bühne: außen oder innen?“, heißt es im Prolog, als Einladung an die Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer, sich Fragen über das rätselhafte Wesen des Theaters als Widerschein des Realen zu stellen.

Judith hat ihre Eltern und den Mann, der sie liebte, verlassen, um Blaubarts Frau zu werden. Er führt sie in seine dunkle, fensterlose Burg — eine steinerne Behausung, doch zugleich ein fühlender Raum, der weint, bebt und stöhnt und in dem sich sieben verschlossene Türen befinden. Die junge Frau will erfahren, was die verbotenen Zimmer enthalten, und sie mit Licht und Wärme erfüllen. Obwohl Blaubart sie von ihrem Wunsch abzubringen versucht, verlangt Judith die Schlüssel und öffnet die Türen eine nach der anderen: Sie erblickt Foltergeräte, Waffen, Schätze, Geschmeide, einen Garten — und überall entdeckt sie beunruhigende Spuren von Blut. Die siebente Tür schließlich enthüllt Blaubarts frühere Ehefrauen, in reiche Gewänder gekleidet: die Frauen des Morgens, des Mittags und des Abends. Mit Juwelen geschmückt und in einen Sternenmantel gehüllt, wird Judith zur Frau der Nacht. Die Konzentriertheit der Handlung, das Fehlen räumlich-zeitlicher Koordinaten und die unergründliche Atmosphäre verweisen auf eine Reise, die sich ganz im Inneren vollzieht.

Das Thema von De temporum fine comoedia hingegen ist das Jüngste Gericht, in einer Reinterpretation, die in Orffs persönlichen religiösen Anschauungen wurzelt. Die Erstellung des Textes in Altgriechisch, Latein und Deutsch beschäftigte den Komponisten ein ganzes Jahrzehnt bis 1970, wobei der Wesenskern des Werkes zunehmend von der apokalyptischen Vision des alexandrinischen Theologen Origenes bestimmt wurde, in der am Ende der Zeiten auch den Dämonen Vergebung und Rettung zuteilwird.

Im ersten Teil der Comoedia verkünden neun Sibyllen das bevorstehende Weltende und die ewige Verdammnis der Gottlosen. Diesen Prophezeiungen setzen neun Anachoreten im zweiten Teil ein entschiedenes „Nein“ entgegen: Jener letzte Tag wird, so erkennen die gelehrten Eremiten, nicht als Triumph eines strafenden Gottes hereinbrechen, sondern als Aufnahme des Bösen in das Göttliche. Die Tilgung aller Schuld und die Rückkehr aller Wesen zu Gott finden im dritten Teil ihren Höhepunkt in der Rückverwandlung Lucifers in den „Lichtbringer“ von einst. Seine Bitte um Vergebung kleidet der gefallene Engel in Worte aus dem Gleichnis vom verlorenen Sohn: „Pater peccavi.“

Orffs Oratorienoper, die Romeo Castellucci und Teodor Currentzis erstmals seit der Salzburger Uraufführung im Jahr 1973 wieder auf die Festspielbühne bringen, überwältigt durch ihre urtümliche Energie. Diese resultiert nicht zuletzt aus beharrlich wiederholten rhythmischen Mustern, einem mechanischen Bewegungsprinzip, das eine Vielzahl von Personen erfasst und von der Choreografin Cindy Van Acker in Körperpartituren übersetzt werden wird. Die Atmosphäre, die Herzog Blaubarts Burg durchdringt, ist diametral entgegengesetzt: Castellucci begegnet der düsteren Intimität eines Dramas ohne äußere Aktion, indem er auf den Blickpunkt von Judith fokussiert — und auf ein Trauma, das ein Theater der Psyche entfesselt.

Das Nebeneinander der beiden Werke offenbart tiefe Verbindungen, und es scheint, als würde das Weltgericht Judith gelten, als hätte sie selbst ein Verbrechen begangen …
