THE LOVE WIZARD: Concert Various

El amor brujo , by Manuel de Falla, is one of the most important works in the Spanish repertoire, with the famous Ritual Fire Dance and Song of Fatuous Fire . Initially conceived as an Andalusian pantomime for a chamber ensemble and cantaora —commissioned by bailaora Pastora Imperio— and later transformed into a symphonic version of a ballet, it tells the story of the torment of the gypsy Candelas by the specter of her former lover.
Georges Bizet portrays, with Carmen, the paradigm of a free and brave woman, seductress and mistress of the reins of her life. The praise of a free and rebellious love ("Love is a rebellious bird that no one can tame," proclaims Carmen at the beginning of the "Habanera") gives shape to a vibrant and vigorous music. The orchestral suites bring together the high points of the most performed French opera around the world.
In West Side Story , Leonard Bernstein revisits William Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet in the form of a Broadway musical and places it in New York in the fifties, in the love affair of two teenagers belonging to two rival gangs: the Jets , sons of white workers, and the Sharks, Puerto Ricans. The orchestral suite of symphonic dances collects the best themes from the most innovative musical in Broadway history.
