Two leading artists team up and bring together a selection of violin and piano masterpieces, performed in an outstanding and insightful way. Debussy’s sonata, composed in the last years of the French composer’s life, is full of sensuosity, while Janáček’s four-movement sonata is full of nationalistic feelings and of intense fragmentary gestures. The recording closes with Richard Strauss’s monumental and overtly romantic sonata, composed by the great German composer when still in his early twenties.

We can unashamedly say that Iturriagagoitia and Bagaría give one of the finest performances of these works and we truly believe this recording is a must have!

Elegancia, política, denuncia y epitalamio

En general, los programas de mano intentan explicar qué tienen en común las obras que se van a interpretar. Hoy, sin embargo, tenemos el atípico caso en que las obras son muy dispares entre sí, y muestran más la atracción de los polos opuestos que la vibración por simpatía. De ahí las cuatro palabras del título, conceptos que poco o nada tienen que ver unos con otros.

 

La primera sonata de Mozart forma parte de un grupo que el compositor, recién instalado en Viena (¡por fin en Viena!) dedicó a una pianista. Eran nuevas en su género, pues exigían dos intérpretes de altísimo nivel, y demuestran una clara voluntad del compositor de asombrar al nuevo público de la ciudad, exprimiendo al máximo su infinita inventiva rebosante de ideas. Mozart en estado puro, perfección, sorpresa, y elegancia.

 

Más de un siglo después, Janáček escribió esta sonata para violín y piano, siendo la única que publicó para esta formación. Esta sonata se enmarca en el contexto de la primera guerra mundial y de la posición rusófila de la región de Moravia, que aspiraba a pasar al control Ruso saliendo del dominio alemán. ¿No da vueltas el mundo? De carácter muy intenso y dramático, no puede decirse que no sea una obra política.

 

El subtítulo del concierto sí es una declaración -de amor en este caso- por el compositor Jordi Cervelló, que murió en septiembre de 2022... Nos unía una gran amistad. Este dúo es una rica mezcla de estilos, un diálogo constante con una dialéctica que va de lo más apasionado y dramático a lo más etéreo y sublime. ¿Quién no escucha a Shostakovich en esta sonata? ¿Quién no siente la denuncia ante los desmanes del mundo? Batallador hasta la muerte, Cervelló no paró de condenar todo aquello que le parecía injusto, sin pelos en la lengua y sin ninguna vergüenza. Con esta obra le brindamos hoy nuestro sincero homenaje.

 

Para finalizar el concierto, interpretarán la sonata de Cesar Franck, una de las obras de música de cámara más inspiradas del siglo XIX. La obra surgió como regalo de boda para el gran violinista Eugène Ysaÿe, de ahí el epitalamio, y respira romanticismo, delicadeza, amor y armonía. Se diría que su estilo es la perfecta unión de la forma alemana y la improvisación francesa, una síntesis del espíritu romántico que había alcanzado por fin la perfección. La sonata ha sido transcrita para infinidad de instrumentos y agrupaciones de cámara. Los cuatro movimientos son muy diferentes entre sí, como el programa entero, pero comparten unos elementos temáticos que otorgan una unidad total a la obra.

No hay un solo elemento en común entre estas sonatas, sin embargo, estamos convencidos que tiene todo el sentido del mundo programarlas juntas. ¿Qué será?

Elegance, politics, denunciation and epitalamio

In general, handouts attempt to explain what the works to be performed have in common. Today, however, we have the atypical case in which the works are very different from each other, and show more the attraction of the opposite poles than the vibration of sympathy. Hence the four words in the title, concepts that have little or nothing to do with each other.

 

Mozart's first sonata is part of a group that the composer, recently settled in Vienna (finally in Vienna!) dedicated to a pianist. They were new to his genre, as they required two performers of the highest level, and they show the composer's clear will to amaze the new audience in the city, making the most of his infinite inventiveness brimming with ideas. Mozart in its purest form, perfection, surprise, and elegance .

 

More than a century later, Janáček wrote this sonata for violin and piano, the only one he published for this ensemble. This sonata is framed in the context of the First World War and the Russophile position of the Moravian region, which aspired to pass to Russian control out of German rule. Doesn't the world go round? Very intense and dramatic in nature, it cannot be said that it is not a political work .

 

The subtitle of the concert is a declaration -of love in this case- by the composer Jordi Cervelló, who died in September 2022... We were united by a great friendship. This duo is a rich mixture of styles, a constant dialogue with a dialectic that goes from the most passionate and dramatic to the most ethereal and sublime. Who does not listen to Shostakovich in this sonata? Who does not feel the complaint against the excesses of the world? A fighter to the death, Cervelló did not stop condemning everything that seemed unfair to him, without mincing words and without any shame. With this work we offer him our sincere tribute today.

 

To end the concert, they will perform Cesar Franck's sonata, one of the most inspired chamber music works of the 19th century. The work arose as a wedding gift for the great violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, hence the epitalamium , and breathes romanticism, delicacy, love and harmony. It would be said that his style is the perfect union of German form and French improvisation, a synthesis of the romantic spirit that had finally reached perfection. The sonata has been transcribed for an infinite number of instruments and chamber ensembles. The four movements are very different from each other, like the entire program, but they share some thematic elements that give the work a total unity.

There is not a single element in common between these sonatas, however, we are convinced that it makes all the sense in the world to program them together. What will it be?
