With Reinhold Glière, born in Kiev, died in Moscow, son of the instrument maker Moritz Glier from the Vogtland, we begin a small musical journey through a united Europe, which was already invoked in the greetings to the opening concert in 2022.

 

Art and culture can provide the building blocks to bridge gaps. Or even the English Channel. Sir Edward Elgar is on the program, without pomp and circumstance, but unmistakably Elgar, with a small, noble work. The festival orchestra is supported by the Schumann Quartet, which caused great enthusiasm in Erl last summer and will be performing two more evenings.

 

Where would the Tyrolean Festival Erl be without Richard Wagner at the start? After Bayreuth, the way leads to Verdi in Milan. Both two groundbreaking composers, both born in 1813, both revolutionized opera in their own - nationalistic - way. And beyond that, they avoided each other for the rest of their lives.

 

Anton Bruckner takes us back to Austria. His "Te Deum", still one of his most popular works today, which the devout composer described as the "pride of his life", is just as much the perfect end to the first evening as it is the perfect start to the 2023 Festival

Mit Reinhold Glière, geboren in Kiew, gestorben in Moskau, Sohn des Instrumentenbauers Moritz Glier aus dem Vogtland, beginnen wir eine kleine musikalische Reise durch ein geeintes Europa, das schon in den Grußworten zum Eröffnungskonzert 2022 beschworen wurde.

 

Kunst und Kultur können die Bausteine liefern, um Gräben zu überbrücken. Oder gar den Ärmelkanal. Sir Edward Elgar steht auf dem Programm, ohne Pomp und Circumstances, aber unverkennbar Elgar, mit einem kleinen, noblen Werk. Dem Festspielorchester steht hierbei das Schumann Quartett zur Seite, das in Erl bereits im vergangenen Sommer für große Begeisterung gesorgt hat und zwei weitere Abende gestalten wird.

 

Was wären die Tiroler Festspiele Erl ohne Richard Wagner zum Start? Nach Bayreuth führt der Weg zu Verdi nach Mailand. Beide zwei bahnbrechende Komponisten, beide Jahrgang 1813, beide haben auf ihre – nationalistische - Art die Oper revolutioniert. Und sind sich darüber hinaus zeitlebens aus dem Weg gegangen.

 

Anton Bruckner führt uns zurück nach Österreich. Sein „Te Deum“, auch heute noch eines seiner beliebtesten Werke, das der tiefgläubige Komponist als „Stolz seines Lebens“ bezeichnete, ist ebenso der perfekte Abschluss des ersten Abends wie der perfekte Beginn der Festspiele 2023.
