With expressive freedom of expression, Schönberg's music and Pappenheim's text tell of a woman's desperate and fearful search for her lover. Her state of mind is reflected in the dissolution of syntax and tonality. "Strictly in the style of Brahms" meanwhile, Schönberg created his orchestral version of Brahms' Piano Quartet in G minor, in which tradition and novelty form a dialectical unity, while preserving the traditional harmonic structure.
