Three centuries that slumbered this baroque oratorio born in Sicily at the end of the
17th century, on the Deluge and the drift of Noah on his ark. Three years
now that the Argentinian leader
Leonardo García Alarcón took him out of
shadow, and offers us a masterpiece, original and captivating, halfway between lyrical declamation,
dear to Monteverdi, and the virtuoso fire
by Vivaldi.
Because yes, there are already a few
Four seasons in Falvetti's Deluge, and in particular pages of
torrential rains and storms
stunning instrumentals. There are
a bit also of Monteverdi's Orfeo, in the power of the choirs,
the declamation of the soloists, the dramatic magnetism of the roles.
And the booklet? A real mix
as Baroque philosophy would have it: allegory of the Old Testament and earthly reality, furies of
Mother Nature and human passions.
What emerges is an abundant score, full of cataclysmic effects: church music that
borders on the largest theatre.
Leonardo García Alarcón does justice by transcending the score with
all the spice, exuberance and refinement that suits. It federates
in this project for the Basilica a
thirty artists: choir, orchestra
and continuo, soloists, and added
real islands of grace and poetry
with oud, zarb and tambourines
by Keyvan Chemirani. At the heart of
art music, tradition
oral, popular and still alive… “a fire that should never be
let it go out when interpreting the music”.

Trois siècles que sommeillait cet oratorio baroque né en Sicile à la fin du
XVIIe siècle, sur le Déluge et la dérive de Noé sur son arche. Trois ans
maintenant que le chef argentin
Leonardo García Alarcón l’a sorti de
l’ombre, et nous offre un chefd’œuvre, original et envoûtant, à michemin entre la déclamation lyrique,
chère à Monteverdi, et le feu virtuose
de Vivaldi.
Car oui, il y a déjà un peu des
Quatre saisons dans le Déluge de Falvetti, et notamment des pages de
pluies diluviennes et de tempêtes
instrumentales renversantes. Il y a
un peu aussi de l’Orfeo de Monteverdi, dans la puissance des chœurs,
la déclamation des solistes, le magnétisme dramatique des rôles.
Et le livret ? Un vrai mélange,
comme le veut la philosophie Baroque : allégorie de l’Ancien Testament et réalité terrestre, furies de
dame Nature et passions humaines.
Il en ressort une partition foisonnante, pleine d’effets cataclysmiques : une musique d’église qui
frôle le plus grand théâtre.
Leonardo García Alarcón rend justice en transcendant la partition avec
tout le piment, l’exubérance et le raffinement qui conviennent. Il fédère
dans ce projet pour la Basilique une
trentaine d’artistes : chœur, orchestre
et continuo, solistes, et y a ajouté de
véritables îlots de grâce et de poésie
avec le oud, le zarb et les tambourins
de Keyvan Chemirani. Au cœur de
la musique savante, la tradition
orale, populaire et toujours vivante… « un feu qu’il ne faut jamais
laisser s’éteindre au moment d’interpréter la musique ».
