Mastering the art of vocal composition was the ultimate goal of musical education in France: studies at the Paris Conservatoire were geared to achieving that final stage of theoretical knowledge, and candidates for the Prix de Rome were assessed on their ability to produce such a work, in the form of a cantata. The emphasis on vocal music may be explained by the high prestige in France of opera and opéra-comique, which in Jules Massenet’s time also extended to oratorio and the mélodie. Eager to explore areas other than the stage, his generation took to the concert hall and the salon with the same dedication and a desire to achieve nobility of style in every genre.

L’art de l’écriture vocale est le point d’horizon de l’enseignement musical français : toute l’organisation des études du Conservatoire de Paris mène vers cette ultime étape du savoir théorique et c’est à la lumière de sa maîtrise – cantate à l’appui – que l’on évalue les jeunes artistes dignes d’être désignés Prix de Rome. Si cette prévalence du lyrique s’explique par l’importance que l’on accorde en France à l’opéra et à l’opéra-comique, elle bénéficie aussi, à l’époque de Jules Massenet, à l’oratorio et à la mélodie. Curieux d’explorer d’autres contrées que les seules planches des théâtres, sa génération investit le concert et les salons avec un même sérieux et une volonté d’atteindre, dans tous les genres, une noblesse de style.

L’arte della scrittura vocale è l’orizzonte ultimo dell’insegnamento musicale francese: l’intera organizzazione degli studi al Conservatorio di Parigi porta verso quest’ultima tappa del sapere teorico e infatti i giovani concorrenti per il prix de Rome vengono valutati sulla base di una cantata, che deve dimostrare la loro padronanza di tale scrittura. Questa prevalenza dell’elemento lirico si spiega con l’importanza che l’opera e l’opéra-comique hanno in Francia, ma giova anche, all’epoca di Massenet, ai generi dell’oratorio e della mélodie. La sua generazione, curiosa di esplorare altri ambiti oltre a quello del palcoscenico, produce con la stessa serietà d’impegno anche per le sale da concerto e per i salotti, con la volontà di raggiungere una certa nobiltà di stile in tutti i generi.
