Giulio Cesare in Egitto (often abbreviated Giulio Cesare) is the most performed Italian opera by George Frideric Handel on modern stages. Written in London in 1724, it was an immediate international success and was also performed in Hamburg, Brunswick and Paris in the following years.
Forgotten for almost two centuries until the revival of baroque music in the 1960s, since the 21st century Giulio Cesare has remained the most popular opera seria, from Chicago to Cologne, from Sydney to New York to Vienna.
The show is presented in a vast co-production involving the theatres of Ravenna, Modena, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Lucca and Bolzano/Trento.
The musical direction is entrusted to Ottavio Dantone at the helm of the Accademia Bizantina, one of the most popular ensembles for the interpretation of ancient music since the 1980s. The ensemble has received considerable critical and public acclaim and boasts constant participation in major European festivals, such as Salzburg, Ravenna, Holstein and Lucerne as well as extensive tours in Europe, the United States and Japan.
