In a peaceful and happy Swiss countryside the presence of the tyrant Gesler begins to weigh. He always demands more from his subjects. More money, more obedience and servility. One day, he forces everyone to bow down to his hat planted at the top of a pike. Old Melktal who refuses, he puts out his eyes. To William Tell who refuses, he gives the choice to die or to submit to a test: shoot an arrow through an apple placed on the head of Little Tell, his son.
