Freezing cold and darkness reign in Duke Bluebeard's castle. But Judith has left her past life behind to illuminate his dark fortress with her love and to get to the bottom of the secrets of his soul. But what is hidden behind the seven locked doors of his castle? Bluebeard's bitter loneliness or Judith's inner despair? The dark legend of Duke Bluebeard, who is said to have imprisoned and murdered his beloved, continues to inspire a wide variety of artists to this day. Since Charles Perrault's fairy tale adaptation “La Barbe-Bleue” from 1697, the material has been constantly evoking new interpretations - from Maurice Maeterlinck's symbolist drama “Ariane et Barbe-Bleue” to Pina Bausch's scandalous play “Bluebeard” to interpretations by contemporary authors such as Dea Loher or Amélie Nothomb. Béla Bartók also devoted himself to this subject and composed his first and only opera, “Duke Bluebeard's Castle”, which was finally premiered on May 27, 1918 in the Budapest Opera House. But what is it about the Bluebeard myth that fascinates us? Why don't we get tired of dealing with this material? To this day, society has been recreating its bluebeard myth over and over again. The figure of Bluebeard is not only used as a projection surface for Judith, but also as a social construct for all of our dreams and desires. Director Paul-Georg Dittrich, who is returning to the Aalto-Theater after his production of “Orfeo | Euridice”, looks behind the facade of the myth and lets us all become residents of Bluebeard's castle. Born in Hungary, Gábor Káli will make his debut with the Essen Philharmonic.
