Oratorio / OrchestralConcert
Chamber musicConcert
In the 1930s antisemitism had a dramatic development in Germany. On 9th November 1938 7000 Jewish homes and establishments were destroyed, and several were killed. On the Memorial Day of this occasion, we will play music by Pavel Haas, Leo Smit, Gideon Klein and Erwin Schulhoff, as well as hearing stories by author Ruth Maier. They were all killed in different concentration camps. Through their lives and their art, we will look at what happens to people when others allow borders to be made. Using Ruth Maier’s own words, we will also look at what each one of us can do to make the world a better place. Memorial Day On the 85th anniversary of The Night of Broken Glass and the start of Holocaust we will remember these composers and their lives. The Diary Ruth Maier is 18 years old on 10th November 1938. She lives in Vienna and enters adult life at the same time as her hometown is destroyed. A year later she comes to Norway as a refugee. Here she has a relationship with poet Gunvor Hofmo. The last sign of life from Ruth is a note given to Gunvor as she tries to get off the boat in Oslo. Ruth Maier writes a diary from the age of 12, until she dies at the age of 22. Through her diary we can read about how her life changed dramatically, and how art, music and love also contributed to this. Music in Captivity All the composers whose music we will hear at this concert, got their lives destroyed by the Nazis. The pieces we will hear tells us a story about who these people were, when they still lived in freedom. Birgit Amalie Nilssen will lead us through the concert. She works at ARKIVET – Peace and Human Rights Centre. The horn player Radovan Vlatkovic is a versatile musician and conductor who has visited us several times before, as a conductor and chamber musician.
