Vincenzo Salvatore Carmelo Francesco Bellini (1801–1835), an Italian romantic opera composer born in Sicily, author of the famous Norma and the Puritans , recreated the opera story of lovers who pay for their passion with life and have shaped creativity in literature since the Renaissance. music.
Themes of Romeo and Juliet have been tackled by many composers, but unfortunately few of them have been successful. Among the so-called living works today are only Gounod's opera Romeo and Juliet (1867) and Bellini's version from 1830, which is often not often staged. Bellini created the opera in just six weeks and incorporated a lot of music into it, which he wrote for his earlier work Zaire.
Bellini’s creative power was cut short prematurely, yet she was recognized by many leading figures in the art of the time, including Liszt, Glinka, Chopin, Sand, Musset, Hugo, and Dumas. Bellini was not a reformer, he was inspired by Haydn and Mozart, he strived for clarity, elegance of form and melody, and sought a close connection between music and word. He found his way to the audience mainly with individual charm and elegance of bright vocal melodies for which he is known. One of
Shakespeare's most famous versions is the opera Capuleti and Montegiit differs mainly in that it does not bring the whole story, but only the last day of the life of Verona lovers, a feeling of melancholy that ends in a shocking ending. This is an opera without the legendary "balcony scene". In it, the role of Romeo is interpreted by a woman (mezzo-soprano), the lovers are in a deep emotional relationship from the very beginning, and it ends with one of the most shocking final scenes from the opera repertoire. In it, both Romeo and Juliet are alive to the very end. Before they die together, they sing a duet.
Director Frank van Laecke, who directed the operas Katja Kabanova, Lucija Lammermoorska and The Virgin of Orleans on our stage, Puts Bellini’s version of the famous story in a photography studio in Verona in 1945. Capellio, the godfather of the Capulet clan, invites his loved ones to a photographic portrait of the family. Even before the first shot is taken, we hear the crack of a gun. Capulet's son dies on the sofa next to him. The overture begins, Bellini's music is heard in the background. Revenge is being prepared
