Verdi considered Il Barbiere “the best of the existing comic operas” and Beethoven implored the author at their meeting: “Most importantly, write more Il Barbieres! This exact opera by “the Swan of Pesaro”, the name given to Gioachino Rossini during his lifetime, became the most popular, in Russia too.

Meanwhile, its first performance turned out to be one of the most infamously strange events in the history of music: the public’s reception was less than modest. The premiere took place at the Teatro Argentina in Rome on the 20th of February 1816. Its negative reception was due in large part to the admirers of Giovanni Paisiello, the author of a great number of operas, including the work called Il Barbiere di Siviglia. There was a hum of voices in the audience, mixed with loud deliberate coughing, that the composer could not bear: he left the theatre before the end of the performance. But Rossini had tried to be respectful towards his elder colleague and changed the name of the opera. Originally, his Il Barbiere was called Almaviva, ossia l’inutile precauzione. In spite of that, the opera quickly reverted to the name by which it was destined to win the admiration of music lovers from around the world.

The play of the same name by Pierre-Augustin de Beaumarchais became the basis for the libretto. It barely differs from the vaudevillian plots of the French theatre of those days and, perhaps, could have been completely forgotten, had it not been for Rossini’s creation. The plot is simple. It took Beaumarchais two phrases to retell it: “An old man is in love (Bartolo, doctor of medicine) and is going to marry his pupil (Rosina) tomorrow. Her young admirer (Count Almaviva), who is smarter, surpasses him, takes Rosina from under the guardian’s very nose and marries her that same day at Bartolo’s house”. But it is well known that the story could have ended very differently if Figaro, the ex-valet of the Count, retrained as a barber, had not happened to be present. He develops numerous ruses and risky tricks which allow the Count to meet Rosina and reach the desired goal.

However, every comic opera is a “hard nut” for stage directors to crack. How can a real laughter of the spectators be achieved? In the Bolshoi, this task was solved several times. The history of the Bolshoi knows thirteen productions, amongst which the comic burlesque performance Il Barbiere di Siviglia stood on end in 1923 was exceptionally famous. The idea belongs to conductor Nikolai Golovanov, director Vladimir Lossky and set designer Fyodor Fedorovsky. All female parts were performed by men and the other way round. So, great Antonina Nezhdanova performed Count Almaviva.

It was a bright but one of the rare episodes. As a rule, in old productions the stage directing played a secondary part, while the music was a priority. In different years the opera was conducted by Vassili Nebolsin, Samuil Samosud, Kirill Kondrashin, Boris Khaykin… and performed by the best singers of the opera troupe. (There is a famous recording in Russian from 1952, in which all the Bolshoi stars of those days performed: Ivan Kozlovsky, Vera Firsova, Ivan Burlak, Mark Reizen).

It is impossible to argue with Rossini, as Evgеny Pisarev, a recognised theatre comedy writer and the author of the current Bolshoi production, contends. According to him, this story is so light and fanciful, he simply did not take the “risk” of staging it seriously.

Thanks to Evgеny, The Bolshoi has its performance in the jokey manner, for which the technique of “theatre-within-a-theatre” was adapted. The action takes place in two separate spaces. The first is a “stage”, a stylised theatre from Beaumarchais’s time, a choreographic and literally elevated space. Below, there is a “backstage”, arranged as a modern theatre. When the artists are in the down-to-earth, “everyday” space, they behave like normal people. Someone is wearing sports clothes; someone is being made up or examined by a doctor… But going up the stage, they put on different, theatrical costumes, change the way they move and communicate with each other. And everything that then happens on “stage” is dramatic or comic, it is already a “real theatre” (in the theatre), an open buffoonery, commedia dell’arte, of course, at the real stage of the Bolshoi.

Между тем, ее первое исполнение обернулось одним из печально знаменитых в истории музыки курьезов: прием у публики оказался более чем скромным. Премьера состоялась в римском театре «Арджентина» 20 февраля 1816 года. Неуспех ей обеспечили поклонники маститого композитора Джованни Паизиелло, автору великого множества опер, в том числе и сочинения под названием «Севильский цирюльник». В зале стоял такой гул, смешанный с громким нарочитым кашлем, что композитор не выдержал и покинул театр, не дожидаясь окончания представления. А ведь Россини, желая выказать старшему коллеге свое уважение, даже изменил название. Первоначально его «Цирюльник» именовался «Альмавива, или Тщетная предосторожность». Правда, уже вскоре обрел то название, под которым ему суждено было завоевать любовь меломанов всего мира.

Основой для либретто послужила одноименная пьеса Пьера Огюста Бомарше. Она мало отличается от водевильных сюжетов французского театра того времени и, возможно, была бы полностью забыта, если бы не творение Россини. Сюжет прост. Чтобы пересказать его, самому Бомарше хватило двух фраз: «Влюбленный старик [Доктор Бартоло] собирается завтра жениться на своей воспитаннице [Розине]. Юный ее поклонник [Граф Альмавива], как более ловкий, опережает его и в тот же день сочетается законным браком под самым носом опекуна у него же в доме». Но всем очень хорошо известно, что история могла бы закончиться иначе, не окажись поблизости Фигаро, бывший графский камердинер, переквалифицировавшийся в цирюльника. Он изобретает множество уловок и рискованных трюков, которые позволяют графу встретиться с Розиной и достичь желаемой цели.

Однако любая комическая опера представляет собой «крепкий орешек» для постановщиков. Как добиться того, чтобы зрителю было по-настоящему смешно? В Большом эту задачу решали неоднократно. Тринадцать постановок знает история Большого театра, среди которых особенно прославилось знаменитое пародийное комедийное представление «Севильский цирюльник дыбом», придуманное в 1923 году дирижером Николаем Головановым, режиссером Владимиром Лосским и сценографом Федором Федоровским. Все женские партии исполняли мужчины, все мужские – женщины. Так, великая Антонина Нежданова пела Графа Альмавиву.

Но это пусть яркий, однако выходящий из ряда вон эпизод. Как правило, в старых постановках режиссура уходила на второй план, на первом была музыка. В разные годы этой оперой дирижировали Василий Небольсин, Самуил Самосуд, Кирилл Кондрашин, Борис Хайкин… И пели лучшие вокальные силы оперной труппы. (Существует знаменитая запись 1952 года на русском языке с оркестром Всесоюзного радио (дирижер – С. Самосуд), в которой приняли участие все тогдашние звезды Большого – Иван Козловский, Вера Фирсова, Иван Бурлак, Марк Рейзен).

С Россини спорить невозможно – так считает Евгений Писарев, признанный театральный комедиограф и автор ныне идущей постановки в Большом. По его мнению, эта история настолько легкая и фантазийная, что ставить ее всерьез он просто «не рискнул».

С его легкой руки Большой играет «Севильского цирюльника» в шутливом ключе, для чего на вооружение взят прием «театр в театре». Действие разворачивается в двух пространствах. Первое — это «сцена», стилизованный театр времен Бомарше, пространство «хореографическое» и в буквальном смысле — возвышенное. Ниже расположено «закулисье», решенное как театр современный. Пока артисты находятся в приземленном, «бытовом» пространстве, они ведут себя как обычные люди. Кто-то сидит в спортивном костюме, кого-то гримируют, кого-то осматривает врач… Но поднимаясь на «подмостки», они надевают другие, театральные, костюмы, меняют пластику и способ общения друг с другом. И все, что затем происходит на «сцене» — драматическое или комедийное, это уже и есть «настоящий театр» (в театре), откровенная буффонада, комедия дель арте, в том числе, конечно, и на реальной сцене Большого.
