An exciting evening of chamber opera combines Luke Bedford's contemporary opera "Through his Teeth" with Claudio Monteverdi's dramatic madrigal "Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda" from 1638. The thematic bracket is the question of truth. Can fact and fake news be distinguished in a complex reality?

"Through his Teeth" was created in 2014 as a commissioned work for an examination of the "Faust" material at the London Royal Opera. Composer Luke Bedford and his librettist David Harrower deal with a real crime that took place in England in the 1990s: it is the story of a man who seduced, lied to and financially robbed several women over a period of decades. The title "Through his Teeth" picks up on an English language image that is used for lies "by the line and thread" and also transports the underhandedness through the quasi-smiling teeth.

Monteverdi's madrigal is also about (not) recognizing the truth: during the first crusade, the Christian crusader Tancredi mistakes the Saracen warrior Clorinda, his lover from the enemy camp, in her armor for a man and challenges her to fight. Tancredi deals a fatal blow to Clorinda and only recognizes her when he removes her helmet.

Die inhaltliche Klammer ist die Frage nach der Wahrheit. Lassen sich in einer komplexen Realität Fakt und Fake News unterscheiden?

„Through his Teeth“ entstand 2014 als Auftragsarbeit zu einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem „Faust“-Stoff an der Londoner Royal Opera. Komponist Luke Bedford und sein Librettist David Harrower verarbeiten einen realen Kriminalfall, der sich im England der 1990er Jahre ereignete: Es ist die Geschichte eines Mannes, der mehrere Frauen über Jahrzehnte hindurch verführte, belog und finanziell ausnahm. Der Titel „Through his Teeth“ nimmt ein englisches Sprachbild auf, das für Lügen „nach Strich und Faden“ benutzt wird, und durch die quasi lächelnden Zähne auch die Hinterhältigkeit mittransportiert.

Auch in Monteverdis Madrigal geht es um das (Nicht-)Erkennen von Wahrheit: Während des ersten Kreuzzuges hält der christliche Kreuzfahrer Tancredi die sarazenische Kriegerin Clorinda, seine Geliebte aus dem feindlichen Lager, in ihrer Rüstung für einen Mann und fordert sie zum Kampf. Tancredi versetzt Clorinda einen tödlichen Schlag und erkennt sie erst, als er ihren Helm abnimmt.
