Luigi Rossi (1597-1653) produced with Il Palazzo incantato the first large-scale opera, in Rome in 1642, in the private theater of the palace of the papal family of Cardinal Barberini. If L'Orfeo de Rossi was of capital importance in the history of opera in France through its presentation in Paris in 1647, the first opera specially commissioned for the French court at the request of Mazarin, the first - and only other - Rossi's lyrical work, Il Palazzo incantato , premiered in February 1642. Work-monster - sixteen soloists, double and triple choirs for six and twelve voices, numerous ballets, seven hours of performance at the premiere! - Il Palazzo marks the last flamboyance of opera as it was performed in Rome before the Eternal City banned it for a long time.  

The libretto, signed by Cardinal Rospigliosi, future Pope Clement IX, adapts the furious Roland for the first timeof Ariosto, a masterpiece of Italian poetry called for a long lyrical career. Thus, in this sung palace-labyrinth where the Atlantean mage encloses and makes delirious the finest of chivalry and gallantry, is presented the most inventive and shimmering flowering of lamenti, arias and d ' sets arose from an ephemeral Roman spring. A true grand spectacle opera, with an opulent orchestra and star castrati, this opera was a considerable success which reflected on the glory of its sponsors.
