Gian Carlo Menotti is a classic example of Nemo propheta in patria: much loved in the United States, famous throughout the world, but still rarely performed in Italy. The diptych The Telephone & The Medium, first performed in New York in 1946, consists of two very different short works. The first tells the surreal relationship between Ben and Lucy, hampered by her obsession with her phone. An extremely current theme, considering how much we are addicted to smartphones today, but shown in a light and fun way. The Medium, on the other hand is probably the only operatic example of noir, has as its plot a series of events triggered by a fake seance, in a succession of scenes full of suspense comparable to a yellow film, a genre that – in the 1940s – was achieving great popularity.

Menotti has been defined by many scholars as the heir of Giacomo Puccini, he was capable of transporting and adapting Italian opera to American taste. This new production of the Varese Estense Festival – Menotti sees a cast led by an international star like Manuela Custer, alongside young promises of Italian opera. Conducting his Canova Orchestra is Enrico Saverio Pagano, already included by Forbes magazine in the list of 100 Under 30 destined to change Italy. Direction, sets and costumes are by Serena Nardi, artistic director and founder of the Varese Estense Festival.

Gian Carlo Menotti è un classico esempio di Nemo propheta in patria: amatissimo negli Stati Uniti, celebre in tutto il mondo, ma ancora poco eseguito in Italia. Il dittico Il Telefono & La Medium, eseguito per la prima volta a New York nel 1946, è costituito da due brevi opere molto diverse tra loro. La prima racconta il surreale rapporto tra Ben e Lucy, ostacolato dall’ossessione di lei per il proprio telefono. Un tema estremamente attuale, considerato quanto oggi siamo dipendenti dagli smartphone, ma mostrato in maniera leggera e divertente. The Medium, invece è probabilmente l’unico esempio operistico di noir, ha come trama una serie di eventi scatenati da una finta seduta spiritica, in un susseguirsi di scene colme di suspense paragonabili a un film giallo, genere che – negli anni ’40 – stava raggiungendo grande popolarità.

Menotti è stato definito da più studiosi l’erede di Giacomo Puccini, è stato capace di trasportare e adattare l’opera italiana al gusto americano. Questa nuova produzione del Varese Estense Festival – Menotti vede un cast guidato da una star internazionale come Manuela Custer, accanto a giovani promesse della lirica italiana. A dirigere la sua Orchestra Canova è Enrico Saverio Pagano, già inserito dalla rivista Forbes nella lista dei 100 Under 30 destinati a cambiare l’Italia. Regia, scene e costumi sono di Serena Nardi, direttrice artistica e fondatrice del Varese Estense Festival.
