Il turco in Italia So-called Turkish operas were a popular genre on the theater and opera stages in the 18th and 19th centuries. One was fascinated by the exotic magic of the Orient and with a shudder heard the stories of the allegedly submissive women who were available to the men in harems, and delighted in the fantasy of the virile-seductive oriental man. From today's perspective, these are bad clichés and cultural misunderstandings. So today you can still do a Turkish opera like Rossini's Il turco in Italiabring it to the stage without perpetuating the prejudices? The German opera and drama director tried it: He moved the Rossini opera into the apartments, corridors and entrances of a petty-bourgeois apartment building of our day and ignited a pleasurable, cryptic game about all the misunderstandings that arise in the clash of oriental and western- modern culture. He knows Rossini by his side, because the composer himself had a lot of fun with the parodistic exaggeration by talking to the seducer Selim, the ridiculous, because much too old, husband Geronio and his enterprising young wife Fiorilla, who is chained to the domestic stove Put archetypes of the Commedia dell'arte on the stage and introduced the poet Prosdocimo into the plot, Musically, our Il turco in Italia production, which became a real hit with the public at the premiere two years ago, promises rapid tempos, breakneck arias and lots of buffa fun. The highly virtuoso role of Fiorilla is ideally cast with the spirited Olga Peretyatko, with Rossini-proven character actors such as Renato Girolami, Nahuel Di Pierro and Pietro Spagnoli at her side.
