Judas Iscariot criticizes Jesus Christ for allowing himself to be celebrated too much by the crowd and for bringing the prostitute Mary Magdalene to the disciples. In his anger, he turns to the Pharisees, who promise him a reward if he betrays Jesus. Judas sees this betrayal as his duty and the Pharisees now manipulate the crowd in such a way that Jesus is nailed to the cross with loud hooting.

With the rock opera ›Jesus Christ Superstar‹, the British Andrew Lloyd Webber and the librettist Tim Rice achieved the breakthrough to become the most successful musical team of all time. The film adaptation of the play from 1973 - like the play on the stage - was initially rejected as blasphemous by various Christian groups, which does not detract from the popularity of the work, which has meanwhile become a classic. The production is a takeover from the Oldenburg State Theater.
