The Johannes Passion, which premiered on Good Friday 1724, marked the beginning of Johann Sebastian Bach's almost three decades of activity as Thomaskantor
City of Leipzig. The work, which is based on the Passion story from the Gospel of John, surprised the congregation with its hitherto unknown vocal drama and symphonic power. In addition to the solos, which comment on and reflect on what is happening in freely composed arias, the choir plays a prominent role: it embodies the excited crowd, but also gives the listeners space for contemplation in extensively interpreting chorales.

Die am Karfreitag 1724 uraufgeführte Johannes-Passion stand am Anfang der fast drei Jahrzehnte andauernden Tätigkeit Johann Sebastian Bachs als Thomaskantor der
Stadt Leipzig. Das auf der Passionserzählung des Johannes-Evangeliums beruhende Werk überraschte die Gemeinde mit bis dahin ungekannter vokaler Dramatik und sinfonischer Wucht. Neben den Soli, die in frei gedichteten Arien das Geschehen kommentieren und reflektieren, kommt dem Chor eine herausgehobene Rolle zu: Er verkörpert die erregte Volksmenge, gibt den Zuhörer*innen in ausführlich ausdeutenden Chorälen aber auch Raum für betrachtendes Innehalten.
