Matthias Pintscher is what you can confidently call a real double talent. He is a worldwide success as a conductor and composer and can also be seen in a double capacity at the Elbphilharmonie, conducting one of his works at the podium of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. The program is completed by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's famous violin concerto and a beguiling orchestral fantasy by Alexander von Zemlinsky. The evening's soloist is the exceptional 22-year-old violinist Noa Wildschut, who was already on stage with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at the age of seven. Deep blue seas, kings, princesses, imposing underwater castles, immortal souls - and a heartbreaking love story: Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale »The Little Mermaid« has everything your heart desires. It tells the story of the Sea King's youngest daughter, who falls in love with a human prince during a spectacular rescue operation on the high seas. In order to see him again and to make her soul immortal through his love, she agrees to a pact with the underwater witch. She dresses the mermaid in human form, but in return demands her voice as a tribute. And although she is rejected by her prince, everything turns out well in the end. Alexander von Zemlinsky set this roller coaster ride of emotions to music in a dazzling »Fantasy for Orchestra«. At the beginning, Pintscher's »Neharot«, dedicated to the people in New York who lost their lives to the corona pandemic in spring 2020, will be heard. »Neharot« is Hebrew for »tears«, but also for »rivers« and is therefore both: a reflection on »devastation and fear, but also on hope and light«, according to the composer.
