루치아노 베리오의 <신포니아>는 형식과 내용 모두에서 가장 파격적인 현대음악의 하나이다. 이탈리아 태생인 그는 1960년대 후반 대서양 건너 미국에 장기 체류하면서 새로운 정치사회적 배경에 기반을 둔 대단히 아방가르드한 음악을 기획한다. 작품 속에는 베트남 전쟁의 참화, 인종차별에 대한 반대, 고도 소비사회에서 느끼는 현대인들의 고독과 소외 등이 모두 담겨 있다. 특히 3악장에는 말러의 <교향곡 제2번> ‘부활’의 주요 테마에 베토벤과 드뷔시, 라벨과 베르크 등 다양한 작곡가들의 음악이 마치 클럽 DJ들의 믹싱 음악처럼 현란하게 짜깁기 되어 있다. 애초 스윙글 싱어즈를 염두에 두고 작곡된 아카펠라 성악 파트는 가창과 중얼거림, 탄식과 절규가 혼재되어 있어 현대인의 파편화된 정신세계를 보는 듯하다. 바르토크의 <이상한 중국 관리 모음곡>도 1차 대전 후의 혼돈을 배경으로 불협화음과 부조리가 지배하는 세계의 그로테스크한 풍경을 다루고 있다.

Luciano Berio's <Sinfonia> is one of the most unconventional pieces of modern music in both form and content. Born in Italy, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean and stayed in the United States for an extended period of time in the late 1960s, planning highly avant-garde music based on a new political and social background. The work contains the devastation of the Vietnam War, opposition to racial discrimination, and the loneliness and alienation felt by modern people in a highly consumer society. In particular, in the third movement, the main theme of Mahler's <Symphony No. 2> 'Resurrection' and music by various composers such as Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel, and Berg are brilliantly woven like music mixed by club DJs. The a cappella vocal music part, originally composed with the Swingle Singers in mind, is a mixture of singing, muttering, sighing, and screaming, and seems to look at the fragmented mental world of modern people. Bartok's “Strange Chinese Official Suite” also deals with the grotesque landscape of a world dominated by dissonance and absurdity against the backdrop of chaos after World War I.
