The source for the libretto, written by Alexander Borodin with the participation of the critic Vladimir Stasov, was the monument of ancient Russian literature "The Lay of Igor's Campaign", which tells about the unsuccessful campaign of Prince Igor of Novgorod-Seversk against the Polovtsy in 1185.

Doctor, chemist, teacher Borodin wrote his only opera for 18 years in between scientific discoveries, the advancement of women's education and the care of a seriously ill wife. He died before he could finish writing Prince Igor, and Alexander Glazunov and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov completed the opera based on his drafts.

The premiere of "Prince Igor" opened in 1933 the third season of our theater. Since then, the repertoire has changed seven more performances. One of them was produced by the theater at the Zvezda House of Culture, when in the early 70s our building was closed for repairs - it was a performance by director Boris Ryabikin and conductor Iosif Aizikovich. The main long-liver among the Samara "Igor" was another performance by Boris Ryabikin - a production of 1985, the musical director of which was Alexander Govorov: the performance lasted 23 seasons in the repertoire. And the premiere of this eighth production was the first that the theater performed after a large-scale reconstruction in 2006-2010.
