According to Henri Murger in Scenes from Parisian Life, “Bohème is the preliminary stage of artistic life, it is the prelude to the academy, to the hospital or to the morgue.” Something vague therefore characterizes the essence of the Bohème, deadly dead ends included . At the same time, there is something timeless and lasting for generations that exerts an irresistible attraction on those called upon to do so; so also on Rodolfo, Marcello, Schaunard and Colline, the protagonists of Puccini's opera "La Bohème". Her free life, plagued by money worries, gets out of balance when one day the ailing Mimì shows up at the door.

Die Episodenform von Henri Murgers seit 1845 als Fortsetzungsgeschichte veröffentlichtem Roman hat Puccini zu einer neuartigen musikdramatischen Bilderfolge inspiriert. Die 23 Kapitel der literarischen Vorlage auf vier Bilder verdichtend, bewegt sich das Libretto am roten Faden der Liebesgeschichte zwischen Mimì und Rodolfo entlang. Mit dem Tod Mimìs gelangt jedoch nicht nur ihr Lebensweg an einen unumkehrbaren Endpunkt. Auch die Zurückbleibenden werden mit ihrer Lebenssituation konfrontiert, so dass Puccinis Oper von ihrem Ende her betrachtet wieder an die längere Zeitspanne der Romanhandlung anzuknüpfen scheint. Für Collines Mantel sind „die frohen Tage“ ebenso vorüber, wie die unbeschwerten Tage der Jugend: „Es ist aus mit uns, mein Alter, wir sind tot und begraben“, so Murgers Marcel im Schlusskapitel des Romans,"Youth does not return."
