In ancient Rome, around 80 AD, the magnanimous Emperor Tito loves Berenice, but Vitellia, devoured by her ambition, wants to marry him in order to gain power. Taking advantage of the love given to her by Sesto, Tito's best friend, she convinces him to assassinate her. The plot is unmasked and Tito, the benevolent, responds to the affront with clemency. He forgives In 1791, while Mozart was working at Die Zauberflöte , he received a commission for an opera to celebrate the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia. In three weeks, La Clemenza di Tito is tied up. Deploying a free song that gives pride of place to female voices, Mozart minimizes recitatives, shows the best of himself by mastering orchestral and choral forces.
