Atto I. Sulle montagne della Svizzera sta per arrivare l’esercito invasore,
perciò gli uomini si fanno forza e le donne pregano; ma all’annuncio della
ritirata dei nemici, esultano. La marchesa di Berckenfield attende in una
capanna vicina che il suo fedele Ortensio valuti se sia il caso di far ritor-
no al castello o se sia meglio andare altrove. Arriva il sergente Sulpizio
che porta notizie di pace e saluta con affetto Maria, la trovatella che è
stata adottata dall’XI reggimento. Sulpizio, a quattr’occhi, dice alla
giovane che ormai è necessario che prenda marito: già i soldati l’han vi-
sta con un corteggiatore. Maria ammette di aver conosciuto un giova-
notto svizzero che proprio in quel momento viene condotto fin lì dalle
guardie perché sorpreso a spiare: è Tonio. Maria lo trae d’impiccio spie-
gando come il giovane, mettendo a repentaglio la propria vita, l’abbia
salvata da una caduta mortale. Intanto è giunta l’ora dell’appello e le
guardie si allontanano. I due giovani si possono finalmente dichiarare
tutto il loro amore quando sopraggiunge Sulpizio che li sorprende: Tonio
non potrà sposare la sua amata, perché Maria dovrà diventare moglie di
un soldato del reggimento. Nel frattempo Sulpizio apprende da Ortensio
che la marchesa di Berckenfield vuol fare ritorno al castello sotto la sua
protezione. Il fatto desta gioia inattesa nel cuore di Sulpizio, che nella
marchesa ritrova la zia di Maria. La vivandiera era stata infatti affidata
al reggimento dal padre morente. Una lettera da allora conservata sul
petto di Sulpizio ne è la prova. La marchesa è decisa a prendere con sé la
nipote: piangente e compianta da tutti i soldati, Maria lascia il suo reg-
gimento. Intanto Tonio, intenzionato più che mai a guadagnarsi la mano
della bella vivandiera, si è arruolato, per apprendere subito dopo che
Maria non potrà comunque sposarlo, perché ormai sotto tutela della zia.
Atto II. Maria abita ora in casa della zia ma non riesce ad abituarsi alle
maniere aristocratiche che la nuova vita le impone. Mentre si lamenta
per la sua malasorte, arrivano all’improvviso i soldati del reggimento a
farle visita. Tra di loro c’è Tonio che nel frattempo ha fatto carriera e si è
guadagnato l’alta uniforme. Maria ordina ad Ortensio di accompagnare i
compagni nel parco e di offrir loro del vino, quindi assapora il piacere di
essere ancora con Sulpizio e Tonio. Ma sopraggiunge la marchesa che
tronca ogni speranza amorosa dicendo come ormai la nipote sia stata
promessa al duca di Krakentorp. Maltrattato dalla marchesa, Tonio se
ne va e si ritira anche Maria, su ordine della zia. Rimasta sola con Sulpi-
zio, la nobildonna chiede il suo aiuto per convincere la fanciulla ad ar-
rendersi alle nozze aristocratiche e gli svela come Maria non sia in realtà
sua nipote, ma sua figlia, nata da un matrimonio clandestino. Messa al
corrente della verità, Maria si arrende al volere della madre e, giunta la
futura suocera con la sua corte di dame e cavalieri, si accinge a firmare il
contratto. Nel salone fanno irruzione Tonio e i suoi commilitoni. Ai nobi-
li invitati Maria narra la sua singolare storia e, nonostante tutto, dice di
essere ugualmente decisa a sacrificarsi per soddisfare i desideri della ma-
dre. La marchesa però, impietosita e incurante dello scandalo, recede da-
gli accordi con la duchessa e, nel tripudio degli amici del reggimento, be-
nedice le nozze tra Maria e Tonio

Act I. The invading army is about to arrive in the mountains of Switzerland,

 therefore the men are strengthened and the women pray;  but at the announcement of the

 retreat of the enemies, they rejoice.  The Marquise of Berckenfield waits in one

 nearby hut that his faithful Hortensio will consider whether it is appropriate to return

 no to the castle or whether it is better to go elsewhere.  Sergeant Sulpizio arrives

 who brings news of peace and affectionately greets Mary, the foundling that she is

 was adopted by the XI regiment.  Sulpizio, face to face, says to the

 young man who now needs to be married: the soldiers have already seen her

 is with a suitor.  Maria admits to having met a young man

 Swiss notto that at that very moment is brought up there by the

 guards because caught spying: it's Tonio.  Maria gets him in the way she spies

 going like the young man, putting his own life in danger, has it

 saved from a fatal fall.  Meanwhile, the time has come for the appeal and the

 guards move away.  The two young people can finally declare themselves

 all their love when Sulpizio arrives and surprises them: Tonio

 he will not be able to marry his beloved, because Mary will have to become his wife

 a soldier of the regiment.  Meanwhile Sulpizio learns from Ortensio

 that the Marquise de Berckenfield wants to return to her castle under hers

 protection of her.  The fact arouses unexpected joy in the heart of Sulpizio, who in

 marquise reunites with Maria's aunt.  In fact, the vivandier had been entrusted

 to the regiment from his dying father.  A letter since then kept on the

 Sulpizio's chest is proof of this.  The marquise is determined to take the

 her nephew: weeping and mourned by all the soldiers, Maria leaves her reg-

 gimento.  Meanwhile Tonio, more than ever willing to win the hand

 of the beautiful vivandier, he enlisted, to learn immediately after that

 Act II.  Maria now lives in her aunt's house but she can't get used to it

 aristocratic manners that the new life imposes on her.  While she complains

 due to her bad luck, the soldiers of the a regiment suddenly arrive

 visit her.  Among them is Tonio who in the meantime has made a career and it is

 earned the dress uniform.  Maria orders Ortensio to accompany the

 companions in the park and offer them wine, so she savors the pleasure of

 still be with Sulpizio and Tonio.  But the marquise arrives who

 she cuts off all loving hope of her by saying how now her granddaughter has been

 promise to the Duke of Krakentorp.  Abused by the marquise, Tonio se

 Maria leaves and withdraws too, on the orders of her aunt.  She was left alone with Sulpi-

 uncle, the noblewoman asks for her help to persuade the girl to

 go to the aristocratic wedding and she reveals to him how Mary is not in reality

 granddaughter of her, but daughter of her, born of a clandestine marriage.  Mass at

 current of truth, Mary surrenders to her mother's will and, having arrived there

 her future mother-in-law with her court of ladies and knights, she is about to sign the

 contract.  Tonio and his fellow soldiers burst into the hall.  To the nobles

 invited them Maria tells the singular story of her and, despite everything, she says of

 be equally determined to sacrifice herself to satisfy her mother's wishes.
