A 21. tüzérezred mindeneslánya, Marie, kisgyerekként elveszett és a francia hadseregben nőtt fel. Nem tud arisztokrata származásáról, beleszeret egy tiroli parasztfiúba. Amikor megjelenik Berkenfield márkiné, hogy Marie-t magával vigye, a lánynak választania kell a két világ között. A napóleoni háborúk alatt játszódó Az ezred lánya a maga korában az egyik legsikeresebb Donizetti-opera volt, és aztán az egész 19. században ez volt minden koloratúrszoprán énekes álma. 1838-ban a zeneszerző megunta az itáliai cenzúrával való örök küzdelmet, és Párizsba költözött, ahol tehát megírta első francia nyelvű, prózai jelenetekkel dúsított, vígoperáját, melyben sokkal inkább a francia opéra comique sajátosságait és komponistáit követte. Operája elfogulatlan szerelmes levél Franciaországnak – és az ország viszonozta ezt a szerelmet: Az ezred lányát minden évben előadták július 14-én, Bastille-napon.

The all-daughter of the 21st Artillery Regiment, Marie, was lost as a small child and grew up in the French Army. He does not know his aristocratic origins, he falls in love with a Tyrolean peasant boy. When Brand Berkenfield shows up to take Marie with her, the girl has to choose between the two worlds. Daughter of the Regiment during the Napoleonic Warsit was one of the most successful Donizetti operas of its time, and then throughout the 19th century it was the dream of every coloratura soprano singer. In 1838 the composer was tired of the eternal struggle with Italian censorship and moved to Paris, where he wrote his first French comedy, enriched with prose scenes, in which he followed much more the peculiarities and composers of the French opera comique. Her opera is an unbiased love letter to France - and the country has reciprocated this love: The Regiment’s Daughter was performed every year on July 14, Bastille Day.
