At the beginning of 1768 the Mozart family stayed in Vienna. During an audience at the imperial court, Joseph II asked eleven-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus whether “he would like to compose an opera and conduct it himself”. The text book for La finta semplice was written by Marco Coltellini, who used an older libretto by Carlo Goldoni, whose birthday will be 300 years in 2007. With his claim to realistic storylines, Goldoni reformed the commedia dell 'arte into an Italian character comedy and is considered the originator of the modern Comédie italienne.
