This is also the case here in the northern Harz region. Since the New Year's Eve premiere of "The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein" cannot take place due to corona and essential parts of the ensemble were absent due to illness in the rehearsals that had already begun, the theater management, together with director and set designer Hinrich Horstkotte, decided to postpone the production . Fortunately, at the beginning of the 2022/23 season, we had the opportunity to plan space and time and we look forward to the director, stage and costume designer Horstkotte, who is highly valued by the ensemble and the audience. The regent of the fictional small state of Gerolstein, which has no connection to the actual town in the Vulkaneifel, is young, very young. And she loves men, young men in smart uniforms. Before he knows it, the simple soldier Fritz becomes the plaything of their whims. But as quickly as his rise to the rank of general, vain resentment overtakes him. Offenbach's THE GRAND DUCHESS OF GEROLSTEIN is a capricious reckoning with small states, militarism, worn-out court clergy and the arbitrariness of the powerful against the powerless, which has lost none of its momentum and wit to this day.
