"Spring" is the first concerto from Antonio Vivaldi's famous composition "The Four Seasons" (Le Quattro Stagioni), a set of four violin concertos, each representing a different season. The work was composed around 1723 and is part of Vivaldi's Opus 8, "Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Invenzione" (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention). 

It is believed that Vivaldi himself wrote sonnets to accompany each concerto, providing a programmatic element to the music.

The concerto "Spring" (La Primavera) is in three movements and captures the vibrant and picturesque aspects of the season. The first movement, marked "Allegro," depicts the awakening of nature with cheerful birdsong, flowing streams, and blossoming flowers. The lively and joyful melodies evoke the sense of renewal and the arrival of spring.

Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons, part of Op.8 Il Cimento dell’Armonia e dell’Invenzione, are renowned classical music concertos. They gained immense popularity in the 18th century and have enchanted audiences worldwide since the Vivaldi revival in the early 20th century. The programmatic works feature descriptive tags and accompanying sonnets, possibly written by Vivaldi himself. 

The concertos were dedicated to Count Wenzel von Morzin and published in Amsterdam in 1725. While the autograph manuscript is lost, this "Manchester" version of The Four Seasons has been transcribed by Adrian Chandler from surviving manuscript parts, believed to have been prepared by Giovanni Battista Vivaldi, Antonio Vivaldi's father, around 1726. 

They are housed at the Henry Watson Music Library in Manchester, UK and may transmit an earlier version of the concerti, which could be closer to Vivaldi's original intentions than the more well-known Amsterdam version. 

The works draw inspiration from ancient texts and rhetorical concepts, showcasing Vivaldi's operatic composition skills through various themes and concepts. The concertos' allegorical design raises intriguing questions and connections between them.

Baroque music never stood still. Musicians travelled, and inspirations sped across 18th century Europe with all the speed of a Vivaldi concerto. But you don’t need to tell that to Adrian Chandler and La Serenissima – the flamboyant British ensemble that takes its name (and its energy) from Venice, and then adds a triple-shot of energy and flair. Today, they set sail from Venice in the company of Vivaldi, visiting the Germany of Georg Philipp Telemann and enjoying the astonishing, wildly imaginative music of Giuseppe Brescianello – as well as recorder playing like you’ve never heard. Anything’s possible – and then some!
