Despite the fact that the attempts to institutionalize a National Lyric Theater on the stage of the Jovellanos street coliseum had not prospered at the end of the 1920s in Madrid, Spanish lyric poetry was still experiencing moments of late blooming with the premieres that followed one after the other. throughout the 1930s, ending abruptly with the Civil War. A little before that historical gap opened, La tavernera del puerto in Barcelona —exactly on May 6, 1936— and then arrived in Madrid, once the war was over, on March 23, 1940, for which reason it is considered as "the last great zarzuela in history".
It is one of the most lasting successes of the Basque composer, Pablo Sorozábal, and of the 20th century lyric theater that now returns to the stage of the Teatro de la Zarzuela in a new production by a stage director like Mario Gas, who He is a true connoisseur of the theatrical world of Sorozábal due to his family ties. His father, Manuel Gas, premiered the work in Madrid and has since achieved great success with his interpretation of Simpson.
In addition, in the production there is also the master Josep Caballé-Domenech, who will give life to this "evocative score with an impressionist atmosphere and full of port airs, overseas, miscegenation and modern fusions". «This Sailor Romance is not a realistic work nor does it pretend to be; It is a theatrical story tinged with a vapor of legend, or a poetic element, in which a story of smuggling and love in a fishing village is explained». Mario Gas wants to be faithful to the work and for the performers to help "tell the story with all the feeling and all the truth that theater allows", because here theatrical passion is combined with popular culture.
