Pietro Metastasio was the most famous librettist of his time and is still considered the most important poet of the opera seria to this day. His text book on Artaserse was set to music more than 40 times in the 18th century, estimates speak for themselves
of up to 100 settings and adaptations, it is likely to be one of the most successful libretti in opera history. Metastasio called it the happiest of all his children. The libretto by Leonardo Vinci was set to music for the first time in Rome in 1730. The young Artaserse has been on his own since the murder of his father Serse. The intrigues of Artabanos, the former advisor to his father, plunge the young ruler into terrible conflicts of conscience. Despite his contradicting emotions, kindness helps Artaserse to achieve the highest virtues of enlightened absolutism, in the spirit of courtly ruled Europe. Leonardo Vinci, who worked in Naples and Rome, was Metastasio's preferred composer, who set at least six of his dramas to music. The English music traveler Charles Burney wrote about Vinci,Artaserse was to be Vinci's last opera, he died in the spring of the year it was premiered.
