One hall, three distinct moods: laughter, reflection, and romance are all on the program in this exceptional evening, streamed live from the Opéra de Lyon! Barrie Kosky, Russian opera specialist, offers up a new production of a masterpiece rarely seen in the West: The Golden Cockerel, the final opera by Rimsky-Korsakov. After over thirty years in the business, this is the first time that the esteemed director has taken on the daunting task of preparing this singular spectacle of Russian opera, a scathing critique of power and corruption that falls somewhere between popular opera and epic panorama, fairy tale and political satire.

Unlike other Rimsky-Korsakov operas based more firmly in Russian culture and myth, The Golden Cockerel lends itself perfectly to the vision of Kosky, who has woven it into a disorienting and dreamlike universal fable. In the starring roles, you'll be thrilled to see the great Dmitry Ulianov (Tsar Dodon) and Mischa Schelomianski (Polkan), as well as the marvelous Nina Minasyan (the Tsaritsa of Shemakha). The Orchestra and Chorus of the Opéra de Lyon, under the baton of principal conductor Daniele Rustioni, perform the opera's rich and sensual music to perfection—once again, a one-of-a-kind evening at the opera in Lyon!

Le Coq d'or Rimsky-Korsakov

Last opera by Rimski-Korsakov, The Golden Cockis a satirical compendium of his work and a century of Russian opera. The composer also emphasizes the grotesque contours of Pushkin's tale, multiplying comic situations and winks at Russian culture. By depicting Dodon as a Don Quixote stricken with oblomovism, Rimsky-Korsakov mocks the tsarist power. And by developing – much more than Pushkin – the theme of the Orient, he not only sublimates through the music the power of seduction of the mysterious oriental princess: he gives the piece some echoes of the Russo-Japanese war and beginnings of the Revolution. Unsurprisingly, the incumbent tsar Nicholas II largely censured the composer's work. Rimsky-Korsakov thus never saw this ultimate masterpiece played, the symbolism and comic verve of which

Dernier opéra de Rimski-Korsakov, Le Coq d'or est un condensé satirique de son œuvre et d'un siècle d'opéra russe. Le compositeur appuie d'ailleurs les contours grotesques du conte de Pouchkine, multipliant situations comiques et clins d'œil à la culture russe. En dépeignant Dodon comme un Don Quichotte frappé d'oblomovisme, Rimski-Korsakov moque le pouvoir tsariste.
