The men line up to court the beautiful, smart, and wealthy Portia of Belmont. The young Venetian Bassanio would also like to try his luck, but he lacks the money for this venture. His friend, the merchant Antonio, is happy to lend it to him out of deep affection, although he himself has to take out a loan from the Jew Shylock – on highly questionable terms. Shylock doesn't charge interest, but if Antonio can't pay back the money after three months, he'll have to vouch for it with a pound of his own flesh. A bet on life and death.

As in Shakespeare's comedy, Reynaldo Hahn also combines a cheerful, almost operetta-like love story with the deep tragedy of the despised and therefore vengeful Shylock. Carnivalesque Venice moods and blissful love duets contrast the abysmal despair of the two protagonists Shylock and Antonio, who are equal in their stubborn bitterness. Premiered in Paris in 1935, this French opera in Mozart's style is now having its German premiere in Bielefeld.
