Funny meeting that that of Gounod and Molière, of the nineteenth century contaminated by the seventeenth: friction of writings, rhythms, atmospheres, music and theater mixed.
This opéra-comique by Gounod is much more than a work according to Le Médecin Despite Him ; the spoken dialogues are literally those of Molière. Sganarelle, a lumberjack who, despite himself, becomes a doctor (but who, after all, gets along very well) here prescribes a baroque medicine whose key words are intoxication and laughter, alongside Léandre in love, Lucinde, Valère the
servant and his Master Géronte.
Gounod's music is lovely and the theater reinvents itself through it. Like Molière's play, it is at the same time burlesque, senseless, light and
deep, creaking and moving.
