Puccini's first work, written for a competition that did not reward it (the Sonzogno of 1883 won by Zuelli), Le Vili was immediately resumed, thanks also to the publisher Ricordi, with a full success that did not fail in the following years (he directed it also Mahler in 1892).

Set in the Black Forest and based on a fantastic subject (the same romantic ballet Giselle, from 1841), with a female character (Anna) who is the first of Puccini's heroines dedicated to love to the point of sacrifice - Le Villi already shows the compositional qualities that Puccini would develop in the following years. "Puccini has something more", writes Ricordi: he knew he had found what he had been looking for for decades: a "true teacher" - that is, Verdi's heir.
