A significant place in the repertoire of the St. Petersburg Opera is occupied by the direction of "operetta on the opera stage". One of the rare gems of this genre is Robert Plunkett's "Corneville Bells".

The premiere of "The Bells" in 1877 was a sensational success, the operetta withstood over four hundred performances in Paris, after which its triumphant march around the world began, the public enthusiastically accepted it in London and even in New York.

The popularity of "Corneville Bells" was provided by a romantic plot and, of course, music. The multicolored palette of the score included dance rhythms, spectacular ensemble numbers, sparkling verses and extended arias. Light, memorable melodies instantly scattered, they were played everywhere: from aristocratic salons to organ grinders on the streets ... However, today Plunkett's operetta has become an undeservedly forgotten rarity, which inspired the artistic director of the theater Yuri Alexandrov to bring it back from oblivion.

“To be honest, it’s a mystery to me why Plunkett’s work is now so rarely performed on stage, because the melodic material is divine, every number is a hit ... And the plot! An infinitely beautiful story about an eighteenth century girl and a prince who turned her life upside down. There is everything here: noble heroes, ancient castles with ghosts, and even the dramatic line of the father, who looks like the protagonist of Pushkin's The Miserly Knight. Our performance is a luxurious fairy tale for adults, for everyone who wants to escape from everyday life, plunge into beauty and dream,” says Yuri Alexandrov.

Значительное место в репертуаре театра «Санктъ-Петербургъ Опера» занимает направление «оперетта на оперной сцене». Одна из редких жемчужин этого жанра — произведение Робера Планкетта «Корневильские колокола».

Премьера «Колоколов» в 1877 году имела сенсационный успех, оперетта выдержала свыше четырехсот представлений в Париже, после чего началось ее триумфальное шествие по миру, публика с восторгом приняла ее в Лондоне и даже в Нью-Йорке.

Популярность «Корневильским колоколам» обеспечили романтический сюжет и, конечно, музыка. Многоцветная палитра партитуры вместила танцевальные ритмы, эффектные ансамблевые номера, искрометные куплеты и развернутые арии. Легкие запоминающиеся мелодии моментально разлетелись, их наигрывали повсеместно: от аристократических салонов до шарманщиков на улицах… Однако сегодня оперетта Планкетта стала незаслуженно забытым раритетом, что вдохновило художественного руководителя театра Юрия Александрова вернуть ее из небытия.

«Честно говоря, для меня загадка, почему произведение Планкетта сейчас так редко исполняется на сцене, ведь мелодический материал божественный, каждый номер — это шлягер... А сюжет! Бесконечно красивая история о девушке восемнадцатого века и принце, перевернувшем ее жизнь. Тут есть всё: благородные герои, старинные замки с привидениями и даже драматическая линия отца, похожего на главного героя «Скупого рыцаря» Пушкина. Наш спектакль — это роскошная сказка для взрослых, для всех, кому хочется отвлечься от повседневности, окунуться в красоту и помечтать», — рассказывает Юрий Александров.
