In his work, Jacques Offenbach, in alliance with librettist Jules Barbier, refers to three well-known short stories by Hoffmann, uniting them with a common plot. The plot is based on three completely different love stories that ended tragically for Hoffmann himself. Fantastic visions of a brilliant poet looking for love in a complex and contradictory world, the inability to find spiritual harmony, the experiences of the protagonist - these are the main problems raised by the authors of the work and the directors of the play. The opera Tales of Hoffmann is a fantastic performance about the adventures of the protagonist, a difficult production work, unusual musical material, and a complex dramatic line. A mysterious world filled with extraordinary characters is revealed to the audience. People and dolls, love and mysticism - this is an encyclopedia of the creator's mental states, which are revealed step by step in Offenbach's beautiful music and the play's dramaturgy. In different scenes of the opera, diametrically opposite female images appear - the beloved of the protagonist (Olympia, Juliet, Antonia, Stella). Other heroes are also striking - mocking, insensitive and cruel people surrounding the poet. All the characters, uniting in the mind of Hoffmann, also excite the imagination of the audience. In this great creation of Offenbach, thanks to the triumph of music, unusual form and content, the imagination and artistic perception of the viewer will allow a fresh look at the relationship between man and society, man and woman, muse and poet.
