Les Huguenots Meyerbeer

St. Bartholomew's Night, a massacre of Protestant Huguenots by Catholics in and around Paris, was one of the most violent episodes of the European religious wars. In 1832, Giacomo Meyerbeer chose this historical setting as the backdrop for his new commissioned opera, which he developed together with the successful librettist Eugène Scribe. Thanks to Meyerbeer's musical and dramatic invention, the new piece proved to be groundbreaking for the further course of operatic history. Private and historical action are closely intertwined in the opera. A Romeo and Juliet story between the politically committed Huguenot Raoul and the daughter of the Catholic leader Valentine unfolds against the background of the political power struggle at the French court and culminates in the bloodbath of St. Bartholomew's Night. The celebrated production by the directing duo Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito, which has already been shown in Geneva, is now celebrating its NTM premiere and comes up with an electrifying interpretation of the material that is as radical as it is touching.

ie Bartholomäusnacht, ein von Katholiken in Paris und Umgebung angerichtetes Massaker an den protestantischen Hugenotten, war eine der gewaltsamsten Episoden der europäischen Religionskriege. 1832 entscheidet sich Giacomo Meyerbeer für dieses historische Setting als Kulisse seiner neuen Auftragsoper, die er gemeinsam mit dem Erfolgslibrettisten Eugène Scribe entwickelt. Dank Meyerbeers musikalisch- dramatischer Erfindungsgabe erwies sich das neue Stück als bahnbrechend für den weiteren Verlauf der Operngeschichte. Private und historische Handlung sind in der Oper eng miteinander verflochten. Eine Romeo und Julia-Geschichte zwischen dem politisch engagierten Hugenotten Raoul und der Tochter des Katholikenführers Valentine entspinnt sich vor dem Hintergrund des politischen  Machtkampfs am französischen Hof und mündet im Blutbad der Bartholomäusnacht. Die gefeierte und bereits in Genf gezeigte Produktion des Regieduos Jossi Wieler und Sergio Morabito feiert nun ihre NTM-Premiere und wartet mit einer elektrisierenden und ebenso radikalen wie berührenden Interpretation des Stoffes auf.
