Zurga, the newly elected leader of the pearl fishermen in Ceylon, and his childhood friend Nadir, who has lived in self-imposed exile for a long time, meet again after many years. Both were once in love with the same woman. However, in order not to jeopardize their friendship, they swore to each other that they would renounce their love for the young priestess Leïla forever. Shortly after the two friends have renewed their oath, however, Nadir has to recognize his old childhood sweetheart Leïla in a veiled virgin who is praying in the temple for a calm sea. Feelings that were thought to have died out flare up again. When the couple is finally discovered by the angry pearl fishermen trying to escape together, they, led by the rigid high priest Nourabad, demand The Paris premiere of Georges Bizet's first full-length opera »The Pearl Fishers« in 1863 was not to be a great success, and to this day the work has remained a rarity in the operatic repertoire. In the absence of the privately owned autograph score, the original instrumental version of the work is still inaccessible today. It was only in 2014 that the musicologist Hugh Macdonald created a reconstructed version based on the surviving violin direction score, which so far comes closest to the original version. The piece, which was laid out by the composer as a sequence of 16 interlaced musical numbers, is significantly influenced by the exotic subject of the text.
