Premiered in 1911, the comic opera The Spanish Hour is, along with L'enfant et les sortilèges , a very rare example of Maurice Ravel's incursions into the operatic universe. After two failed attempts, the French composer finds in a libretto by Franc-Nohain from 1904 the ideal ingredients for his first opera: Spain, somewhere in the 18th century, love and lack of love, truth and lies, jealousy and intrigue, fidelity and betrayal.

Coincidence or perhaps not, it was precisely these elements, common to Pedro Antonio de Alarcón's 1874 novel, that the composer Manuel de Falla worked on over several years until the premiere of the famous ballet El sombrero de tres picos in 1919, with the Ballets Russes by Sergei Diaghilev.

Contrasts and analogies in a unique, jovial and colorful night, in which opera and ballet appear hand in hand and performed by a cast made up of some of the best Portuguese artists of our time. – Bruno Borralhinho

Estreada em 1911, a ópera cómica A hora espanhola é, a par de L’enfant et les sortilèges, um exemplo raríssimo das incursões de Maurice Ravel no universo operático. Depois de duas tentativas frustradas, o compositor francês encontra num libreto de Franc-Nohain de 1904 os ingredientes ideais para a sua primeira ópera: Espanha, algures no século XVIII, amores e desamores, verdades e mentiras, ciúmes e intrigas, fidelidade e traição.

Coincidência ou talvez não, foram precisamente esses elementos, comuns à novela de Pedro Antonio de Alarcón de 1874, que o compositor Manuel de Falla trabalhou ao longo de vários anos até à estreia do célebre bailado El sombrero de tres picos em 1919, com os Ballets Russes de Sergei Diaghilev.

Contrastes e analogias numa noite única, jovial e colorida, em que a ópera e o bailado surgem de mãos dadas e interpretadas por um elenco constituído por alguns dos melhores artistas portugueses da atualidade. – Bruno Borralhinho
