The Coronation of Poppea is undoubtedly the first opera written on a historical subject. Nevertheless, the political matter ultimately occupies only a secondary role and the work is essentially a painting of love, a love all the more sublime and purer as it brings together beings dazzling with darkness and infamy, such as The Chroniclesof Tacitus told us about it. If the last opera of the master of Cremona symbolizes the birth of modern opera by inventing a new theatricality, it also innovates by its rhythmic, harmonic and vocal boldness, all placed at the service of dramatic efficiency. Primacy is given to singing with the choice of a reduced orchestra where the expression of passions reaches a striking realism thanks to this luminous nudity of the voices.

Le Couronnement de Poppée est sans doute le premier opéra écrit sur un sujet historique. Néanmoins, la matière politique n’y occupe finalement qu’un rôle secondaire et l’ouvrage se veut essentiellement une peinture de l’amour, un amour d’autant plus sublime et plus pur qu’il rapproche des êtres éclatants de noirceur et d’infamie, telles que Les Chroniques de Tacite nous en ont fait le récit. Si l’ultime opéra du maître de Crémone symbolise la naissance de l’opéra moderne en inventant une nouvelle théâtralité, il innove également par ses audaces rythmiques, harmoniques et vocales, toutes mises au service de l’efficacité dramatique. La primauté est accordée au chant avec le choix d’un orchestre réduit où l’expression des passions atteint un réalisme saisissant grâce à cette lumineuse nudité des voix.
