Ein Franzose, ein Engländer, ein Italiener, ein Spanier und ein Deutscher stranden in einsamer Gegend. Wie sich zu ihrer Verwunderung herausstellt, handelt es sich um die Insel der Alcina: jener alle Männer bezirzenden Fee, die doch eigentlich seit 800 Jahren tot sein müsste – sich ihren Gästen aber als alterslos und verführerisch schön präsentiert. Im Widerstreit von Vernunft und Versuchung geraten die Inselbesucher in große (Liebes-)Turbulenzen und können das Eiland erst wieder verlassen, nachdem sie Alcinas Zauber buchstäblich als „alten Zopf“ entlarvt haben. Librettist Giovanni Bertati schildert in seiner Parodie, wie ein alter Mythos von der aufgeklärten Neuzeit ad absurdum geführt wird und spielt dabei mit etlichen Nationalklischees. Aus dieser Steilvorlage schuf Giuseppe Gazzaniga eine wahrhaft komische Oper, die 1772 in Venedig uraufgeführt und bald darauf europaweit gespielt wurde. Joseph Haydn steuerte sogar noch eine weitere Arie für Alcina bei.

Nach dem großen Erfolg von ‚Les Boréades‘ nimmt sich Regisseur Christoph von Bernuth nun einer weiteren Wiederentdeckung an, die musikalisch den Esprit des späten 18. Jahrhunderts versprüht. Ein turbulenter Abend voller Spielfreude und grotesker Situationen, an dem bei weitem nicht nur Alcina in den Spiegel blickt ...

A Frenchman, an Englishman, an Italian, a Spaniard and a German are stranded in a lonely area. As it turns out to her amazement, it is the island of Alcina: the fairy who charms all men, who should have been dead for 800 years, but who presents herself to her guests as ageless and seductively beautiful. In the conflict between reason and temptation, visitors to the island get caught up in great (love) turbulence and can only leave the island again after they have literally unmasked Alcina's magic as an "old braid". In his parody, librettist Giovanni Bertati describes how an old myth has been reduced to absurdity by the enlightened modern age, playing with a number of national clichés. Giuseppe Gazzaniga created a truly comical opera from this which premiered in Venice in 1772 and was soon performed throughout Europe. Joseph Haydn even contributed another aria for Alcina.

After the great success of 'Les Boréades', director Christoph von Bernuth is now tackling another rediscovery that musically exudes the esprit of the late 18th century. A turbulent evening full of playfulness and grotesque situations, in which not only Alcina looks in the mirror...
