Originally a notable public failure, when it premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1904, this opera soon became one of the favorites in the repertoire. The genesis of Madama Butterfly goes back to the trip to London that Puccini made in 1900 to witness the premiere of his opera Tosca. There the composer had the opportunity to attend the performance of a play written by the American David Belasco, which made a great impression on him. Belasco had been based on a novel by John Luther Long and both were inspired by the book Madame Chrysantheme, by Pierre Loti. Determined to compose a work based on the same argument, Puccini once again summoned the same Tosca librettists. The actions take place in Nagasaki, where Pinkerton, US Navy officer who arrives aboard the ship Abraham Lincoln, manages to arrange with a marriage agent his marriage to the young Japanese geisha Cio-Cio-San, nicknamed "Butterfly". After her return to the United States, she waits for him for three years, hoping for a reunion despite the fact that everyone assures her that her lover will never return. During that time she has raised a son by herself, born after the sailor's departure. Finally, Pinkerton returns, but accompanied by Kate, his American wife. He proposes to take care of the child to raise him in the United States, but by then the tragedy has already been unleashed. hopeful in the reunion despite the fact that everyone assures her that her beloved will never return.
