The fourth movement of Gustav Mahler's Lied von der Erde begins as an orchestral idyll, the lynchpin of the next installment of the Symphoniker Hamburg's online concert series. Baritone Michael Volle strikes up a cheerful tone, and gradually everything is set in motion, growing increasingly hectic and finally derailing altogether – only to be tamed once more by the sweet violin harmonics. This is followed by the drastic expressionism of Béla Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin in an arrangement for two pianos. Pianists Nicholas Angelich und Jean-Efflam Bavouzet draw out the orchestral colors, highlighting the singular harmonics and rhythms of this music. The program ends with another idyll in the form of the pastel colors of Claude Debussy's impressionist tonal language: Prélude à l’après-midi d‘un faune.
