«All'impulso della primavera, che solleva l'uomo anche nell'età più avanzata e ogni anno lo coglie con rinnovata sorpresa!»: così Robert Schumann presentava la sua prima sinfonia, dal titolo Primavera, composta in soli tre giorni nel freddo inverno del 1841 ed eseguita tra gli applausi per la prima volta il 31 marzo dello stesso anno alla Gewandhaus Saal di Lipsia da Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. La quarta sinfonia, composta pochi mesi dopo, fu pensata inizialmente come una "fantasia sinfonica", in cui i movimenti si succedono senza interruzioni e i temi si ripresentano più volte; accolta freddamente, Schumann la rielaborò nell'orchestrazione ripresentandola con successo nel 1852.

« To the impulse of spring, which raises man even in his most advanced age and every year catches him with renewed surprise! »: this is how Robert Schumann presented his first symphony, entitled Spring,  composed in just three days in the cold winter of 1841 and performed to applause for the first time on 31 March of the same year at the Gewandhaus Saal in Leipzig by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy . The fourth symphony, composed a few months later, was initially conceived as a "symphonic fantasy", in which the movements follow one another without interruptions and the themes recur several times; received coldly, Schumann reworked the orchestration and successfully presented it again in 1852.
