Internationally renowned soloist and conductor Michael Barenboim takes to the podium to join the strings of the Hellenic Youth Symphony Orchestra (ELSON) in a concert that touches some of the most sensitive chords of the repertoire. Mendelssohn completed the String Symphony no. 10 , in which we discern both Haydn's influence and signs of the composer's genius. Schubert's light Rondo for violin and strings , a rarely performed piece of art, elevates the Viennese version of classicism as a perfect "musical dessert". On January 20, 1936, King George V passed away; the next day, within just a few hours, Hidemit wrote the suite Trauermusik (mourning music) in London to commemorate his death. The work is broadcast live by the BBC with the composer performing the viola part. The concert closes with Dvorak's melodic Serenade, a work of refined lyrical beauty, which is among the composer's most popular orchestral pages.
