Midsummer Night's Dream
Our 2020/2021 Season will open with Benjamin BRITTEN's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". This new production, based on the production by David McVICAR, will be modified into "A New Normal" style version; respecting social distance and other COVID-19 prevention measures. "This is one of the most enjoyable operas of the 20th century. It makes you laugh, yet the music is refined and elaborate, tickling the senses. I've chosen this work so that people can experience how fun 20th-century opera can be", ONO Kazushi, the Artistic Director of Opera gives the reason why he featured the opera for the opening production of the new season. Based on SHAKESPEARE's comedic masterpiece portraying the uproar created at the whims of a sprite, this opera was composed using about half the text of the original work. The drama unfolds with motifs and harmonies in BRITTEN's inimitable style, revealing three vivid worlds: that of the fairies, the lovers and the tradespeople. The ear-catching music, full of variety, will delight audiences and draw them into a world of fantasy, with particularly impressive highlights such as the boy soprano fairy ensemble and the countertenor fairy king Oberon. David McVICAR's original production, premiered in 2004 at La Monnaie - De Munt in Brussels with ingenious sceneries and costumes by Rae SMITH , was set in a giant attic of an English country house and portrayed with a modern touch the delicate inner workings of several pairs of women and men. Oberon will be played by FUJIKI Daichi, a NNT Opera Studio graduate who debuted at the Wiener Staatsoper in 2017 as countertenor. Other cast will be performed by talented Japanese artists. We will present Shakespeare- related works in three genres Opera, Dance and Drama in Autumn 2020.
