Parhestene Jan Willem de Vriend og Dejan Lazić er tilbake for å gi oss en ny dose sprudlende Mozart ispedd et Mozart-inspirert ungdomsverk av Franz Schubert.

Mozart elsket teater, men komponerte scenemusikk bare til et eneste skuespill, Tobias Philipp von Geblers fem-akter Thamos, Konge av Egypt. Stykket ble urframført i 1774 i Wien, men til da hadde Mozart kunne fått ferdiggjort to korutdrag. Senere la han til flere orkestermellomspill, men siden teaterstykket aldri ble særlig populært, ble musikken etter hvert også brukt i andre skuespill.

Sommeren 1781 beskrev Mozart sin nye hjemby, Wien, som ’pianoets land’, og han prøvde raskt å få etablert sin abonnementsserie hvor han blant annet tilbød sin nykomponerte pianokonsert nr. 12, som står på kveldens program. Konserten kjennetegnes ved sin melodiske rikdom og lyriske karakter. I andresatsen hilser han til sitt store idol, Johann Christian Bach som døde året før, ved å inkludere noen takter fra en av Bachs overtyrer.

Franz Schubert skrev sin første symfoni som 16-åring i 1813. Da var han elev ved Wien Stadtkonvikt , hvor han blant annet hadde komponisten Antonio Salieri som lærer. Påvirkning fra både Haydn og Mozart kan tydelig høres, men som dirigenten Sir Colin Davis sa det – det er ikke noe galt i å ha rollemodeller. Symfonien innledes med en høytidelig adagio, fortsetter med en godlynt andante, en Haydn-inspirert menuett, og avrundes med en energisk finale.

The combination of subtlety and straightforwardness that springs out of each of Schubert’s symphonies has never been matched. That starts with the composer’s first - a strikingly assured piece of work by a 16-year-old Schubert who has the capabilities of the orchestra and the engineering of a symphony well under his belt. Schubert’s liberated, tuneful music appears always to be telling a story and this early work from one of music’s first true romantics is no exception, despite its bittersweet ambiguity.

Jan Willem de Vriend returns to Bergen to conduct the symphony here alongside music by a composer on whose shoulders Schubert stood. Dejan Lazic is the soloist in Mozart’s graceful and intimate Piano Concerto No 12, before which we hear an intriguing rarity: a performance of the only theatre incidental music Mozart wrote, his tense and dramatic music for the five-act play Thamos, King of Egypt.
