Mozart, Brahms and Dvořák are brought together in a programme full of epic grandeur, lyricism and virtuosity. The Bassoon Concerto KV 191, which Mozart wrote at the age of 18, offers a perfect sampling of the soloistic possibilities of the instrument, which is both virtuosic and highly melodious.

Brahms’ Double Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra may be the maestro’s last symphonic work, but it is part of a long tradition of genres such as the concerto grosso and the sinfonia concertante in which soloists and orchestra engage in constant and intense dialogue. The work, which offers a cross between concerto and symphony, is imbued with a grand, epic sweep, heartfelt lyricism and rhythmic fervour.

Epic and monumental is also the tragic sounding Seventh Symphony by Antonín Dvořák with which the Czech composer established himself worldwide as a first-rate symphonist. The solo parts in this concerto are for soloists from the Orchestra of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.

Mozart, Brahms en Dvořák vinden elkaar in een programma vol epische grandeur, lyriek en virtuositeit. Het Fagotconcerto, KV 191 dat Mozart op 18-jarige leeftijd schreef, is een perfecte staalkaart van de solistische mogelijkheden van het instrument, dat zowel virtuoos als hoogst zangerig uit de hoek komt.

Brahms’ Dubbelconcerto voor viool, cello en orkest mag het laatste symfonische werk zijn van de maestro, het schrijft zich in in een lange traditie van genres als het concerto grosso en de sinfonia concertante waarin solisten en orkest voortdurend en intens met elkaar dialogeren. Het werk, dat een kruising biedt van concerto en symfonie, is doordrongen van een grootse, epische adem, innige lyriek en ritmische vinnigheid.

Episch en monumentaal is ook de tragisch klinkende Zevende Symfonie van Antonín Dvořák waarmee de Tsjechische componist zich wereldwijd op de kaart zette als een eersterangs symfonicus. De solopartijen in dit concert zijn voor solisten uit het orkest van Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.
