Anyone who says Ligeti cannot ignore Le Grand Macabre , his only opera and a masterpiece of wit and pitch-black humour. Mysteries of the Macabre bundles three arias from that opera into one musical rollercoaster full of vocal fireworks, which is not inferior to the coloratura by Mozart and Rossini. In his Hamburg concerto , Ligeti pulls out a completely different register and plays with the thin harmonic tension between the solo horn and the four natural horns in the ensemble. A gem!
